Supporting Small Projects for Female Heads of Households
Programs supporting small projects have targeted female heads of households, including widows who are solely responsible for their families. In the town of Has, the Ihsan Relief and Development Organization supported around 20 business projects for women.
We met Hanaa Al-Omr (a pseudonym), a 45-year-old housewife and mother of six children. Her husband died six years ago after a shell struck their home in Has. Hanaa received funding from Ihsan to start a sewing project, and she chose the idea for her project six months after registering with the charitable organization.
Hanaa told Syria Untold:
“They asked us—around 20 widows—to submit project ideas ranging in value from $600 to $800 USD. Some women chose stores to sell women’s clothing, others wanted sewing machines. Some hoped to open grocery shops, while women with experience in livestock requested cows and sheep to raise.”
She added:
“I have 20 years of experience in sewing, but I was working with simple tools. I did not have the money to buy modern machines to develop my work. So, I requested two machines, one for sewing and the other for embroidery, in addition to a solar panel to generate electricity, a worktable, and the necessary fabrics to start. I can now earn sufficient income to support my family.”
