Rehabilitation Efforts in Rural Idlib Remain Insufficient

Asaad, 45, decided to leave his shop in the city of Idlib and return to his hometown, Saraqib, to repair his partially damaged store so he could reopen it and facilitate residents’ access to essential plumbing and electrical supplies, in an effort to revive a city largely destroyed by the former Syrian regime and its allies.

Asaad told Enab Baladi:
“The number of returnees has started to increase, and life is gradually returning to the city, despite the destruction of buildings.” He added that various organizations have taken responsibility for repairing roads, clearing rubble, and rehabilitating schools.

He noted that his sales have doubled compared to what they were in Idlib, due to the high demand for household sewage network materials, drain cleaning tools, water faucets, electrical wiring, and circuit breakers, many of which were stolen or damaged due to bombing.

Whether through individual efforts, government agencies, or volunteer groups, many are working tirelessly to restore services to towns and villages in rural Idlib, which were either under the control of the former Syrian regime before Bashar al-Assad’s flight on December 8, 2024, or along the frontline areas.

However, these efforts remain insufficient compared to the scale of the needs.
