E-Commerce Thrives in Idlib: Successful Young Entrepreneurs
Amid the similarity of goods and the limited local market in the Idlib area of northwest Syria, e-commerce and product shipping to northern Syria have gained significant attention, especially with the variety of goods offered at reasonable prices compared to local stores.
Local projects and start-ups rely on social media to market their products through Syrians residing in Idlib, promoting the goods they offer and trying to attract customers by offering competitive prices, with the possibility of communication via WhatsApp or Messenger for inquiries and orders.
Prices Lower Than the Market
These social media pages provide a variety of products, such as clothing, household tools, and cosmetics, meeting market needs and filling gaps in specific items like car spare parts, home accessories, furniture, and more.
Enam Al-Farakh, residing in Idlib, told Enab Baladi that her experience with local e-commerce was very good. She noted that she could order the products she wanted without paying any amount before receiving them, and the management of the online shopping page followed up after she received the products to confirm if they matched the specifications.
Recently, Al-Farakh purchased a dress for herself and two pieces of clothing for her baby daughter. Her order arrived at her home after ten days at a “reasonable” price of approximately 850 Turkish Lira, while similar products in local markets could cost around 1,200 Turkish Lira (1 USD = 26.84 TRY).
However, Mohammad Nawar, 33, does not prefer shopping through these pages, believing that seeing the product in reality differs from the image, which could potentially mislead buyers. He considered that social media marketing accounts offering goods at sometimes lower prices than the market may be due to the absence of costs such as store rent, but the products may not match the quality of goods in physical stores.
On the other hand, Abdulwahab, 44, believes that the need for these pages has become urgent, especially as they provide products not available in the region, such as the latest car accessories, home curtains, electrical appliances, and professional cameras. He added that shopping from a global store like Amazon and receiving products from it is complicated in a closed area like Idlib, but these pages offer this option, which is important and allows local residents to obtain products at their real price with reasonable shipping fees.
No Need for Large Capital
Noor Al-Sayed, an online clothing seller, told Enab Baladi that she launched her project selling Turkish clothing about a year ago. She added that the idea came after the increased demand for Turkish fashion, known for its modern and innovative designs.
This type of project has the advantage of not requiring a large capital, as the page management does not need to purchase or store goods in advance but only buys the requested pieces from Turkish e-commerce stores, according to Al-Sayed.
The goods arrive in northern Syria through shipping companies, and then the social media marketing page owners deliver them to customers’ homes. Google Maps is available only in major cities such as Idlib, Azaz, and Sarmada, while other pages rely on offices and stores to deliver goods to clients.
